The Honors Biology class has been studying biotechnology and last week, they put their knowledge to use to debate some of the tough ethical questions that biotechnology presents.
Check out these most recent blog posts to see what the Biology classes have been studying:
DNA Fingerprinting
Insect bacteria called Wolbochia
Modern use of the term usually refers to genetic engineering as well as cell- and tissue-culture technologies. Many ethical questions arise in association with some of these techniques, questions we didn’t have a need to ask in the past, but are now obligated to address. Biology students used a modified Douglas debate format with four students per team.
The affirmative statement was:
“The benefits of biotechnology outweigh the risks.”
The entire school attended and the audience was apparently enthralled, the alloted ten minutes for questions was far too brief, and voting for the winning team resulted in a draw!
